patchwork-oddments.com is a directory of small AI tools that run on your own API key. You bring a key – Anthropic, or anything OpenAI-compatible through the Vercel AI SDK – and use the tools directly. No subscription, no credits, no account required to use most of it.

The bring-your-own-key model exists because of what it removes. I am not reselling inference, so there is no margin to protect, no usage tier to enforce, and no reason to hold your data. It also means the thing costs me almost nothing to run, which is why it can stay up without needing to earn.

Built on the edge, entirely

It runs on Cloudflare end to end: Workers for compute, D1 for data, R2 for storage, and Cloudflare Email for a passwordless login flow that sends a token rather than storing a password. A Hono layer handles the API. Three.js does the interactive graphics.

Choosing the edge shaped the design more than I expected. No long-running process, no persistent connection to lean on, a query budget per request. Work gets pushed into the request that needs it rather than a background worker you forget you are paying for. It is a narrower set of tools than a normal server, and the constraint mostly produced better decisions.

Nine migrations, nineteen page routes, sixteen Vitest files, about 23,000 lines, one person.

What it is honestly for

It is not a business. It has no meaningful traffic, because I have never marketed it – I built it to have somewhere to try things, and it does that well.

Its value here is that it is complete and public. Design, build, deploy, custom domain, auth, storage, tests, and it is running right now. When a client asks whether I can take something from nothing to production on my own, this is the link I send instead of an answer.
